Enabling 4G-LTE-A and 5G Smartphones
As is well known, RECONFIGURABILITY is considered THE enabler for realizing the ambitious functionality and complexity goals of upcoming 4G-LTE Advanced and 5G Smartphones in the context of reduced front-end module (FEM) handset space, high-linearity, and low power consumption, on the one hand, AND large production volume, on the other.
As advertised in the industry, solutions currently under development or initial production to address the tough complexity-space-linearity-power challenge have, thus far, focused on silicon RF-MEMS-based reconfirugable matching and antenna tuning networks. However, the widespread adoption of these approaches in the cell phone industry may well have already failed, as the rate of increase in smartphone complexity and functionality far outpaces that of convergence in attaining, in a timely fashion, the required production volume levels, possibly due to the utilization of sub-optimal device architectures and/or process complexity.
NanoMEMS is addressing these issues by developing REVOLUTIONARY concepts and technologies that enable MINIATURIZED integrated solutions, including reconfigurable matching and antenna tuning networks AND FBAR/SAW/BAW filters, that, among other things, exploit the advantages of RF MEMS techniques in the context of simple, tried-and-true, high-yield/high-volume technologies.
